TEXTING & DRIVING: Campaign Aimed At Teens

The nationwide “It Can Wait” campaign made its way to Valley High School in West Des Moines on Thursday.

The phone company, AT&T, sponsors the campaign, educating students on the effects of texting while driving.

“We focus on the young generations because their novice drivers and they’re our strongest texters,” says AT&T’s Regional Vice President of External Affairs, Beth Canuteson.

Driving simulators allowed students to experience what could happen if they were involved in an accident.

“You can’t just hope that something doesn’t happen but as a driver of the vehicle it’s your job as the driver of the vehicle to make sure something like this doesn’t happen,” says Valley Senior, Natalie Bantz.

Last year, according to the Iowa Department of Transportation, 180 motorists were issued texting while driving citations. There have been 120 texting citations issued in 2013.
